Pongal, the harvest

సంక్రాంతి

The most colorful celebration of the year. It opens with Bhogi, bonfires at first light, welcoming new hopes. On Sankranti, kites fill the sky, homes fill with the smell of sweet pongal, and the streets fill with smiling faces. Sports and games run across the fields until dusk. For three days, no one is in a hurry.

The most sacred day at the Ramalayam. The air fills with chants and slow-burning camphor. Each year, one blessed married couple performs the holy Seetha Rama Kalyanam, and the whole village comes to witness the ceremony. Prayers and bhajans carry on until night.

Three days that the youth of the village organize themselves. Cultural programs, dances, traditional games, and devotional processions run through the streets. The festival closes with Anna Dhaanam, a meal served to everyone in the village without exception. It is the clearest picture of who this community is.
